General Description: SmCo Magnets
As part of the rare earth group of permanent magnets, samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets typically fall into two families of materials. They include rare earth Sm1Co5 and Sm2Co17 and are referred to as 1:5 and 2:17 materials. There’re three different manufacturing processes: sintered SmCo magnets, bonded SmCo magnet, and injection moulding SmCo magnets. SmCo magnet is high performance, low temperature coefficient permanent made of samarium and cobalt and other rare-earth elements. Its biggest advantage is high working temperature-300 degree centigrade. It needn’t to be coated because it is difficult to be eroded and oxidized. SmCo magnet is widely used in motor, watch, transducers, instruments, positional detector, generator, radar, etc.

Key features for sintered SmCo
1) The most excellent temperature characteristics in Rare-Earth magnet family since mid-1960s.
2) Manufactured by a powder metallurgical process which involves the sintering of powder under vaccum. As part of rare earth group of magnets, SmCo magnets typically fall into two families of materials. They include SmCo5 and Sm2Co17, and commonly referred to as 1:5 and 2:17 materials
3) Good corrosion resistance and no special surface treatment is required, which makes SmCo an excellent choice for compact designs where high temperature environments my be present.
4) Grinding and slicing can be operated into the desired shape and size.

Key features for bonded SmCo
1) Being manufactured using both injection and compression moulding techniques, particularly suitable for high volume production of a wide variety of shapes and size ranges.
2) Rare-Earth Cobalt5 and Rare-Earth2 Transition Element 17,two different types of powder are applied to production to be varied to achieve the desired magnetic performance.
3) Precise dimensional control is achieved in both processed and usually the component does not require further machining.
4) Due to excellent corrosion resistance, coating is not recommended for products

Sintered SmCo magnet

Samarium Cobalt holds its standard property in higher maximum temperatures than neodymium,although its maximum strengh is less. The cost of SmCo material is the most expensive,so SmCo is recommended only when its performance is a high temperature environment is a concern.

Characteristics  &  application  of  SmCo permanent magnet

1.SmCo permanent magnet has high magnetic energy product andhigh cercive force. Its properties are better than Alnico,ferrite permanent magnet. Its max. energy product is up to 239kJ/m3(30MGOe), which is three times of that of Alnico8 permanent magnet, eight times of that of ferrite permanent magnet (Y40). So the permanent magnetic component made from SmCo material is small, light and stable in property. It is widely applied to electro acoustic& telecommunication apparatus, electric motors, measure meters, peg-top,electronic watch,microwave apparatus, magnetic mechanism, sensor and other static or dynamic magnetic routes.

2.The curie temp. of the SmCopermanent magnet is high and its temp. Coeff.is low. So it is suitable for use at 300, high temp.

3.SmCo permanent magnet is hear and bristle. Its rigidity strength, tensile strength and press strength are low. So it is not suitable for framework.

4.The main ingredient of SmCo permanent magnet is metal cobalt(CoY99.95%). So its price is high.

Reference points for application design of permanent magnet

1.What we stated herein are typical grades of SmCo permanent magnet only. We could meet your requirements for various magnetic properties too.

2.For application of permanent magnet at high temp., you need consider the following two important parameters: recoil temp. coeff() and intrinsic coercive force(Hcj). Recoil temp. coeff. is a parameter to measure the performance of the permanent magnet with the variation of the temp. When the temp come back to the initial value, the magnetic properties of the permanent magnet will reversibly return to the initial condition too. More smaller the temperature coefficient is, more lower the magnetic properties are. In the meantime, with the variation of the temperature, the magnetic properties of permanent magnet can change irreversibly. This is called irreversible loss. The irreversible loss descends with the increase of the intrinsic coercive force.

3.The appropriate dimensions of he permanent magnet should be taken into account for the application design. Generally speaking, the demagnetization curve of SmCo permanent magnet is close to a straight line and the difference value between Residual Flux Density Br & coercive force Hcb is relatively small. So we should choose the working point (Pc value) around the Max. energy product, i.e. (BH)max. Thus we could utilize the magnetic energy fully and save the cost greatly. Design reference: 0.5Pc1.

4.SmCo permanent magnet is a functional material. It is unsuitable for structure part design. So the usual requirement to the tolerance of the dimensions for structure part is not applicable to it. For the detailed tolerance design, please refer to "permanent magnet supply illustration".

5.SmCo permanent magnet has strong anticorruption function. So it needn't similar surface treatment as that of NdFeB magnet. For the surface protect of SmCo permanent magnet, please turn to "surface protect and protect coating of permanent magnet". The coating will add to the cost in turn.


Bonded SmCo Magnet:

Our bonded SmCo is made with ground sintered SmCo magnet. The powder is mixed with resin and molded like NdFeB bonded magnet. Various shapes of high dimensional accuracy can be produced without further processing. Due to excellent corrosion resistance, coating is not required.

Compression bonded magnets are available using many isotropic neodymium iron boron material grades as well as crushed & powdered samarium cobalt materials. Combinations of different material grades may also be used to create specific magnetic characteristics. Compression bonded magnets offers higher magnetic strength than injection molded magnets due to their higher magnetic particle density, but are limited to simpler geometries. The epoxy binder used is resistant to normal industrial solvent and automotive fluids. To reduce corrosion of the rare earth magnetic materials, they are further coated with epoxy after shaping. The normal application temperatures range from below -40°C to above 165°C.

Compression bonding is most appropriate for relatively simple geometries due to limitations of the compaction process. The tooling costs for compression bonding is comparatively low, making it a better choice than injection molding where volumes are small. However, with modest automation, compression bonding can also be adopted for high volume manufacturing, with volumes upto millions of pieces per year.
